tennessee. >> reporter: when daylight comes to us liberty kentucky, the realization of what's happened will be devastating. and the small town is not alone, this is henryville indiana, another town rocked by a violent storm. dozens of apparent tornadoes tore across the country's midsection, levels homes, buildings, anything in its path. >> catastrophic, you see these things in the media with you guys but you don't have an understanding of it until you see it in person. >> it's just nuts right here. there's people's lives in danger with these storms,. >> reporter: the fury unleashed early starting in alabama, ripping off roofs and snapping power lines. as the day rolls on so did the storm gaining in intensity. storms brought heavy rains,

golf ball sized hail and ferocious winds. there are multiple reports of winds and hail. one man returned to find his home of 30 years reduced to a pile of rubble. >> this is real life stuff here. >> it's now time to clear blocked roads. in illinois already beaten down from the ef4 twister. resident can only hope that their spared. reporting from nashville, sandra endo for ktvu channel 2 news. a storm chaser captured this video of the tornado that hit henryville indiana, the twister did major damage to the town and is blamed for at least one death there. officials say at least 14 people have died in indiana

the bay area forecast. authorities in california county revealed the identity of a skier who was killed in an avalanche in tahoe east back country. 29-year-old benjamin bracket was living in sqwall not far from where that avalanche took place. bracket was skiing with two friends when a wall of snow tapped him. >> fun loving when asked what was a cross country practice like, it's perfect ben saying imagine someone reaching down the throat and trying to pull up your lungs. that's just showed his work ethic. the two other skiers who were with bracket at the time of the slide were not hurt.

an 86-year-old man was stranded for four hour in a ravine near his home before a neighbor spotted him. donald lawrence drove his lexus down an 80-foot enbankment. he was taken to the medical center where he later died. three men are now being linked to as many as 30 other robberies across northern california. a ktvu photographer got exclusive pictures of the men being arrested. the suspects threw money from the car during that chase. authorities now say anna blander, maurice jenkins and a juvenile maybe responsible for 30 robberies throughout the bay area including san joaquin. aaron stewart, anthony perry and stanley turner are now

at that mcdonald's restaurant. workers told us they've had to call police about 100 times in the past month. around 6:00 this evening we saw homeless people and their shopping carts lined up. this area just outside goldennen park has been a gathering spot for the homeless. >> the homeless people here are out of control, pan handling, doing drugs, sleeping, defecating, urinating in door ways right here on the corner

of stonian. >> reporter: mcdonalds workers tell us that they often go inside with their dogs khraeuling they're their service dogs. >> i've been approached at 6:00 in the morning with people asking me if i want to buy drugs when i'm out walking my dog. >> reporter: a clean up operation is now under way at golden gate park and around mcdonalds which includes stepped up patrols. police told us they received four calls for service from mcdonalds just this morning with an average of 400 calls a month from the restaurant. >> that sheer number of calls put as drain on our resources here. and it takes away from other numbers of the community. >> reporter: we contacted the owner of mcdonalds but she did not return our calls. police say the dismantling of occupy san francisco plus weather appear to be part of the influx of homeless to the area. the stepped up patrols will go on indefinitely. reporting live here in san

into reserves instead. the number of lay offs depend heavily on whether voters pass a tax measure. a few days ago we told you about a trailer taken from a business. the trailer has been found but not by police. >> reporter: i'm at a truck and trailer storage yard on east capital avenue in milpitas. back there police say is a 32- foot long trailer police say was stolen. it has more than $100,000 of parts and equipment he and friends had been conducting their own search. >> we went in and we found it under a tarp. >> reporter: blake richards and mike zuniga said they had been driving around checking out storage yards for the past few days when they spotted something here. this is what they were looking for. a 32-foot 18,000-pound trailer which serves as a mobile maintenance shop for the cambrian go cart company. it was taken from the front of

probably guilty this time. >> reporter: prosecutors and ross mirkarimi's defense team questioned florez in a closed door meeting. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a trial date has been set for a death penalty case in contra costa county. the murder trial of nathan burris is said to begin september 17th in richmond. burris is accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend and her friend at the toll plaza where they both worked. this is contra costa county's first penalty case in more than five years. in livermore an obese man is receiving an outpouring support after he posted a video on you tube. robert gibbs just turned 33 yearsology. he estimates he weighs as much as 700 pounds. tkpweub's video has generated 200,000 hits and he just posted it yesterday. he says he's been hospitalized

hundreds of people turned out tonight in napa to mourn three cousins who were killed last week by a drunk driver. new information about that driver's past. debra villalon has the story. >> reporter: it was a head on crash almost 200 miles away in monterey county. here in napa it left several children without moms. >> reporter: this chapel is overflowing with sadness for the loss of 37-year-old rafael lamas, 39-year-old graciela

ramas and maria ochoa lamas. all killed after coming home from a funeral. >> all i remember is there were head lights coming toward them. >> reporter: then crushing impact as a driver allegedly intoxicated careens across the center median on 101 reaching for her cell phone and hit the lamas cousins head on. the nine car wreck sent six people to hospitals including vivian ramirez, the driver we've learned had at least one other dui arrest in 2008. >> a fraction of seconds. we lost three lives and it all could have been avoided by her not getting behind the wheel. by her not reaching for her cell phone. >> reporter: the victims all had decades in napa. two worked for a local winery, and graciela was a stay at home mom to four sons, the eight and 6-year-olds know what happened. the twins just two are too little to understand. community fundraisers are being planned. >> they want to see these kids succeed, they're going to need a lot of help, it's just my uncle on his own with four

$44 million. three people are under arrest tonight. >> the makers of four loko are under fire again by federal officials. the makers are looking into the alcohol contained in a can of 4loko. a lawsuit filed this week is challenging san francisco's ban of plastic bags. a group called save the plastic bag coalition says the city's ban is based on this, misinformation and exaggeration. san francisco's ban has been in place since 2007. and the city is expanding the ban to all retail establishments starting in october and restaurants in 2013. a preliminary ethics investigation is underway involving the head of the fish and game investigation and the controversiable killing of a cougar. he came under fire for that

case. the san joaquin county sheriff's department requested assistance. now the fbi's evidence recovery team says it will be involved in future searches. the goal is to recover all the victims. so far more than 1,000 bone fragments have been found at sites in san joaquin and calaveras county. new details now on a midair collision of a small plane in a helicopter near antioch last month. transportation officials say the pilot of the plane didn't see the helicopter before the crash. investigators also say neither pilot filed a flight plan before taking off. and only the helicopter pilot made contact with air traffic controllers in the air. both pilots walked away from the crash with no serious injuries. 35-year-old craig richard chandler is now facing five felony counts of lewd conduct. he was arrested back in

january. the children all attend san jose's o.b.whaley elementary school. chandler's attorney says he will plead not guilty. brian simoneschi was already a convicted sex offender when he met the girl online. but he failed to register as on offendser when he moved here to see her. the judge handed down the sentence today. in news of the world tonight in syria, the red cross had hoped to deliver badly needed humanitarian supplies. also today two journalists who were wounded in a bombing arrived home in france after being trapped in homs for nine days. in iran officials said it was a record turn out for today's parliamentary elections. voters selected 290

representatives from 3,400 candidates. only a few are considered liberal. results are expected tomorrow. iran's supreme leader called on voters to send a message of national unity in light of increased tensions over tehran's program. there's no way the quake damaged christchurch cathedral will be saved. it will be dismantled. a new cathedral will be built using what can be salvaged from the old one. they cancelled more and more classes. so definitely we are upset. they are already a month into the new semester, why classes on one bay area campus were suddenly cancelled. chief meteorologist bill martin is updating his forecast for the weekend and beyond. which day will be the warmest in his complete bay area forecast.

at city college of san francisco students are learning a painful lesson of dozens of classes were suddenly cancelled. these particular cancellations are almost unheard of. >> reporter: nasi powers says she could not believe when she came to her class and her teacher announced her class was being cancelled. >> it really hurts me, i want to get ready for a new job, the job market is bad. >> reporter: that's one of 70 classes city college has discontinued. usually the college makes cuts before a semester not during. >> a cut of this size is unheard of. >> reporter: that's on top of a $15 million cut earlier this school year which was on top of previous cuts. >> our resources keep shrinking, at the same time

that our communities need us more than ever. >> reporter: besides computer classes the biggest casualty was to numerous i -- english as a second language classes. >> i immigrated here two years ago. without english it's hard to find a job here so it's a big problem. >> reporter: the cancellation also means a loss of jobs and incomes for dozens of part time teachers. >> one person i worked with for 27 years a part time teacher so it's been pretty devastating. >> reporter: all these reductions are helping students to compete for classes there that are becoming more and more scarce. >> they cancelled more and more classes so definitely we are upset. >> reporter: many students and staff here say they are going to sacramento on monday as part of the state grass roots effort to bring attention to the state

bluebird skies it's perfect. the kind of day every skier, snow boarder hopes for. >> what a day. families already up there enjoyed both sun and snow today. they skied, boarded, sledded and some built snow men. it's a relief for resort owners after a long dry wait -- dry winter. one told us they're business is down by 50% but there's now 4 feet of fresh powder. we're headed for a beautiful weekend around here. i want to go quickly back to the developing story in south eastern part of the country now. the interesting thing about this line of thunderstorms is the extend of it from texas to the new york city area. but we're still seeing severe thunderstorms warning in this area and it's late at night. so this is a developing story we talked about earlier in the newscast. of course tomorrow morning our newscast will be talking about rosemary oroszco will be here. a number of tornadoes touched

down and it's a big area. for us it's just beautiful weather. we had such a beautiful winter. stunning, temperatures are going to be in the 70s by sunday. 70s on sunday make it the warmest day on your bay area. 36degrees in napa, this will get you some frost and so when you think about your early golf game and if you're taking the kids to the golf game, it's going to be -- the satellite imagine shows a big ridge of high pressure. you see the jet stream here it is going past the line. this is thousands of miles wide. maybe closer to 2,500 miles it's a big ridge of high pressure. that sets up us warm. the air sinks, it warms, we warm up, storms stay north. and we get a little bit of wind in the hills maybe a little bit

the first time in 20 years. the reservoir is being tapped because rainfall this season is half of normal. ktvu has learned that water use is up in marin by 15%. even so the district does not expect any rationing this winter. a long time resident of the san francisco zoo has been put down. orkney had been in poor health recently and the zoo decided it was time to say goodbye. officials said he had been at the zoo for 36 years and had gone blind. the sale came from eastern canada. orkney leaves behind many offspring. you may call it a match up 50 years in the making. how the warriors faired against the 76ers tonight decade after an historic evening. sports the next.
